Los Rojinegros fell for the first time in the Apertura 2019 season at the hands of Santos Laguna, coming up short with a 1-2 result this Friday night at the Jalisco Stadium. Brian Lozano scored twice for the visitors, and Osvaldo Martinez cut the gap for La Academia with a penalty kick at the 90th minute.

Both teams started with a lot of energy, trying to have the possession of the ball, Los Rojinegros handled Santos pressure in the first minutes, but a costly mistake at the backline gave an opportunity to Lozano, who put the ball in the back of the net to give Club Santos the early lead at the 17th minute mark.

Atlas reacted accordingly and with a lot of intensity they backed up their rival at their area, and started creating some opportunities, the clearest came from the boots of Andres Andrade, whose low driven shot passed by close the near post of goalkeeper Jonathan Orozco.

The rest of the half was a back and forward battle between the two teams, but La Academia created two chances right before the halfway mark, two quick strikes that were saved consecutively by Orozco to end the half.

For the second 45 minutes, Coach Leandro Cufre made a quick substitution, Mauricio Cuero replaced Jairo Torres, looking for a spark off the bench. Santos didn’t backed down from the challenge that Los Rojinegros brought with their persistence trying to tie the score, and continued creating goal chances, but most of them from counterattacks, as the pressure implemented by the locals started to work.

The clock kept moving, and Coach Cufre made two more changes, bringing to the pitch Facundo Barcelo and Brayan Trejo. Santos, on the other hand, brought Diego Valdes and Brayan Garnica, a former Atlas player, to the game, trying to counter the moves made by La Academia.

As the game faded, the visitors found a counterattack opportunity and put the match out of reach for our Rojinegros, with Brian Lozano scoring his second goal of the night. Atlas didn’t gave up, and found a penalty kick after a VAR decision. Captain Osvaldo Martinez converted the opportunity to put the final 1-2 score.

Two visits are up for Atlas, the first one in the Copa MX against Zacatepec next Tuesday at 7:00 PM Central Time, and a trip to the port of Veracruz, to face Tiburones Rojos next Friday in the Liga BBVA MX fixture.
