Atlas took down with a great overall team performance Gallos 2-0 this Friday night at the Jalisco, in Week 12 of the Apertura 2019 season. An own goal from Alexis Perez and a header from Facundo Barcelo gave la Academia three vital points to keep pace in the liguilla hunt.

Coach Leandro Cufre used the same starting XI that escaped from Leon with a point, and it seems like it could be the winning formation for los Rojinegros from now on, deploying two defensive midfielders like Edgar Zaldivar and Lolo Reyes to roam the center of the pitch at all times, giving freedom to Osvaldo Martinez to act as a true number 10, only worrying about creating chances for his teammates.

Gallos threaten with a counterattack approach all first half, but los Rojinegros, surprisingly, managed correctly those situations. With Queretaro sitting back, Atlas took the responsability of being the attacking squad, and tried to create chances (they weren’t very successful, to say the least).

Those intentions displayed by los Rojinegros got them their desired prize, not in the way they expected, though. Osvaldito put a tiny cross at the Gallos area that found no one but a defender, who proceeded to deflect the direction of the ball, and put it at the back of his own net. Lol.

Atlas kept the same energy and doubled the lead 4 minutes into the second half. Mauricio #CueroDios manufactured a pretty cross that found the head of Facundo Barcelo, who scored with ease as he was left unmarked by Gallos. The local team then managed the game and played with the desperation shown by Queretaro, astonished by the fact that they couldn’t impose their gameplan and were defeated by Atlas once again. And the last instants of this encounter, Camilo Vargas once again saved a penalty kick for los Zorros. Easy work for the Colombian.

What’s next?

With 4 points from their last two games, Atlas climbed to 6th place and will be fighting for a liguilla spot until the last week, it seems. After two horrible performances against Chivas and Toluca, Los Rojinegros are back in the hunt. This league makes no sense. Next up? A trip to the border to face Tijuana.
