Atlas almost pulled the improbable by beating the defending champion Tigres, but a late goal from the visitors took 2 points from our Rojinegros, in an entertaining 1-1 tie at the Jalisco Stadium in Week 7 of the Apertura 2019 season.

A controversial VAR decision, and a forgiving Gignac

Halfway through the first 45 minutes, the referee awarded a penalty kick for Tigres, a pretty controversial one, as a argument could be made for the decision to go either way. Gignac stepped up to the spotlight, and his PK was saved by Camilo Vargas, who chose his left side correctly, being crucial once again for Los Rojinegros in a difficult time.

A few minutes later, Gignac had another shot at the opening goal, with a header attempt that slammed the crossbar and didn’t go in, to the fortune of Atlas. Tigres kept the pressure for a couple more minutes, but they hit the snooze button and Atlas escaped the first half unharmed, without being able to create a clear chance for themselves.

A brilliant play from Isijara

Tigres kept their dominance as the second half came around, but slowly Atlas managed to level the things on the pitch. Jesus Isijara almost broke the tie with a header that went a bit wide, but the winger would get the chance to redeeem himself with an individual play, assisting Facundo Barcelo to give Atlas the lead.

Los Rojinegros had another chance with Isijara, but again he couldn’t convert it, this time a 1v1 vs Nahuel Guzman. After that, Atlas tried to keep away the visitors from their area, as Tuca Ferretti made a couple agressive moves from the bench, keeping the pressure, looking for the tie.

Bad luck strikes Atlas

La Academia made a marvelous job at defending everything Tigres threw at them at the last minutes, from crosses to long shots, it seemed like they would pull the upset by beating the defending champions, until bad luck came for Atlas.

At the 93rd minute, a rebound found Jesus Dueñas, as the Tigres midfielder scored the tying goal at the very last moments of the match.

What’s next?

A quick turnaround, as La Academia will host Club America this Friday night at the Jalisco.
