Atlas defeated Cruz Azul this Wednesday night at the Copa MX with a solitary goal from Juan Pablo Vigon, getting their first win of the semester and their first goal in a while. They were better than La Maquina overall and kept themselves in the hunt to qualify to the next round of the competition.

Los Rojinegros started this game strongly, putting pressure on Cruz Azul, and getting several corner kicks. Most of their shots were off, and Cruz Azul was the team with the first real chance of the night. Lichnovsky from La Maquina was left all alone in a corner kick. Fortunately for Atlas, he couldn’t capitalize on his attempt. Duque, Andrade, and Vigon were very active, disrupting Cruz Azul and creating some counters. Vigon was dropped in the area, the ref didn’t give a penalty for that action. Andrade had a decent chance moments after, Allison saved his team with a good move. Los Rojinegros continued their approach and got their reward.

Atlas hadn’t scored in league or cup since the last Copa MX matchup between these two teams a couple weeks ago. A great combination of plays left Vigon all alone to face GK Allison, and the Atlas captained scored after chipping his shot over the GK. La Academia had finally scored after quite some time. Duque could’ve left Vigon all alone again minutes after, but decided to shot himself instead of assisting the cap.

The second half was again dominated by Los Rojinegros, as they kept creating chances, but couldn’t convert them. Jairo Torres missed a great quick play to put Atlas up 2-0 in the firsts minutes of the second half. Vigon again was the protagonist of an Atlas chance, his header after a corner hit the post, danced in the line, and didn’t go in. As the minutes passed, Cruz Azul started to create some problems, mounting counters, and good crosses. They couldn’t convert any of them. Duque was replaced by Edyairth Ortega, and Andrade was left up front. He almost got one in, as his low driven attempt at the 76′ minute past just left of the post. Cruz Azul couldn’t create another chance, a fight broke up and Antonio Sanchez from Cruz Azul got sent off. In the end, Atlas finally won their first game of the semester! They have 4 points now, hoping Zacatepec in the group standings.
